Having a printer at hand is very convenient: two clicks with the mouse - and in front of you any document is printed. So you finally purchased it, put it in a convenient place, connected it to a computer - but ... nothing is printed. What to do? Let's figure out how to do the installation yourself on the example of a very common and popular model: HP LaserJet 1018.
There are several ways to install and configure the printer.
For Windows OS
Method 1
- Open the HP official website, go in and find “Drivers and downloads” there, drive in the device name - in our case HP LaserJet 1018 - and go to it.
- Select the operating system used and click on the "Send" button.
- In the window that opens, find the button "Download" and click it.
- Go to the "Downloads" folder and launch the downloaded file, after which the installation wizard will open. Click "Install" and follow the prompts of the installation wizard.
- We place the printer on a flat surface, connect it to the computer and to the network, put the paper.
- Can print!
Enter the model name and click search - to issue the appropriate drivers.
Method 2
- Click "Start", then "Devices and Printers"
- Click "Install", "Add a local printer", then "Next." Please note: the device itself must be disconnected from the computer.
- In the new window, leave the default settings and go on.
- In the window under the heading "Driver installation" click "Windows Update".
- We see a list of manufacturers in front of us, select HP there, then HP LaserJet 1018, we confirm.
- In the next window, we check that the name is entered correctly and confirm.
- We are waiting for the installation process to complete.
- We refuse from general access.
- We see a message that the HP LaserJet 1018 is successfully installed, click "Finish".
- And now we are conducting a very important step: in the opened window, right-click and select the item “Delete device”, since we will be connected via USB. The trick is that with this removal the software will remain. We will use it.
- Connect, wait a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the software and start printing.
For Mac OS
Installation on a Mac operating system differs slightly, but has some peculiarities.
- We go to the official Apple site and download drivers in the appropriate section. Install them on the computer.
- We connect the printer.
- Go to the "System Settings", we find there "Print and Fax."
- We drive in the device name and select the driver from the list.
- We refuse to share.

Printer setup
It happens that when the software is correctly installed, the device still does not work or it malfunctions. What could be the reason? Let's sort out the main problems.
- First of all, check whether all the wires are intact and connected as needed. Make sure the lights are on. If technically everything is connected correctly, proceed to the next points.
- The main way to deal with problems is to restart the computer. It helps in most cases. If after a reboot, nothing has changed, go to “Start”, “Control Panel”, “Printers and Faxes”, “Your HP LaserJet 1018 Printer”. There may be print jobs in the queue; need to remove them.
- Another common cause of problems is broken USB ports. Try reconnecting from one port to another.
- It happens that there is not enough power supply unit to maintain the voltage on all USB ports. Try disconnecting all USB connections except the mouse and keyboard.
- Refine driver configuration. It is possible that by default you have installed the wrong device with the help of which you are now trying to print something. Put the "default" icon next to the desired device.
