How to recover missing sound on computer

Dear friends, today we will find out what to do if the sound on the computer is gone. We note right away that there can be a lot of reasons for this problem, therefore, there will be many solutions. In this regard, it is worth warning that in order to fulfill the recommendations, it is worthwhile to set aside a separate time for working at your computer or laptop. If you in a hurry try to do everything, then nothing good will come of it.

So how are we going to work? To facilitate the task, we will divide the problem into categories:

  • Connectable speakers that you bought separately and installed in your computer or laptop through a special cable.
  • Built-in speakers found on laptops. Can also stand on the monitor of a personal computer.
  • Plug in headphones. Similar to the first option, only now you are installing headphones, and not speakers.
  • Well, and perhaps the last category: wireless audio playback devices. There can be both headphones and speakers. Again, we will not divide them into two, since there is no sense in this: the connection scheme is the same, unlike the wired method, where the connection may differ.

To facilitate your work, you can immediately select your connection type and go to the appropriate block. In total there will be two of them, which will fully answer the question of why there is no sound on the computer:

  • Speakers, headphones and other external sources of sound. Both wired and wireless types are considered here.
  • The software part, which discusses how to solve driver problems. Those who have built-in speakers (for example, on a laptop) also go directly to this block.

Please note that a replay check is required after each item. To do this, it is desirable to use the same file: it can be a clip on the Internet, so that there are no problems with the file on the computer itself. For example, you turn on the song and there is no sound, but it turned out that the file is damaged. What to do if the sound is gone on the computer? With full readiness to know the answer, we go further.

Speakers, headphones and other external sources of sound

  • So, the sound on the computer does not work for us. How to turn it on? First you need to check the correctness of the connection wires that provide a connection to your devices. That is, if you insert the cord into the wrong socket, then, of course, there will be no sound on the computer. To do this, refer to the speaker instructions from the manufacturer. If you do not have it, you can find it on the Internet.

We check the correctness of the connection wire

  • For wireless audio playback devices, you will need to check the activity of the Bluetooth module. It is regulated by a switch on the speaker housing. In the same way, we check the activity of wireless modules on a computer or laptop. If the connection is established through a separate module that connects to the USB of your PC, then try to put it in another socket.
  • If the connection is OK and there is no sound, then make sure that you turn on your speakers with a special button or switch, which is most often used in systems with a subwoofer. On some models, an indicator light is provided, generally having a green color when turned on.
  • Next, we'll check the sound volume on the speakers: twist the volume button (where it says Volume) upwards. If you have no problems with this, but with playback, we go further.

Adjust the volume on the speakers

  • If you have an additional cable to connect the speakers to the computer, then try using it. You can also ask someone from friends or acquaintances. In the extreme case, you can buy it in the store (but it is advisable to do this, only there is confidence that the problem lies precisely in the wire, as this will lead to additional costs).
  • Try to connect the speakers to another device. You can even to a smartphone or tablet. If the device works for them, then the problem lies in the software part of your computer or laptop. Otherwise, you will need to repair speakers or headphones. Before that, it is recommended to buy a new wire, as described in the fourth paragraph above, or immediately give the device a diagnosis to the master.
  • If everything is in order with speakers or headphones, but there is still no sound, then it's time to check the software part.

Software part

  • So, how to turn on the sound if there are no problems in the speakers or headphones? To begin with, we look for the volume in the settings to be set at the maximum level. On the taskbar (where the Start button is located in the Windows operating system) on the right, almost at the end, there is a sound logo. Click on it with the left mouse button and move the slider to the extreme value in the direction of increasing. For example, if you have a dozen installed, then there should be set to a value equal to 100 percent.

Move the volume slider to 100%

  • Now go to the device manager (control panel menu). To do this, write "Device Manager" in the search bar and click on the found file with the left mouse button. Open the “Sound devices” tab and update the drivers of all audio devices. To do this, click on each right-click and click "Update Driver". Here, make sure that the device is not disabled: if “Disable” is written in the same mini-window, then everything is fine. Otherwise, the device will need to be activated by pressing the item of the same name or the “Enable” item.
  • If this does not help, go to the control panel, then open the “System and Security” menu, then click on the “Resolve Typical Computer Problems” tab, which is at the very top practically. In the window that opens, click on "Troubleshooting audio playback." Following the prompts on the screen, try to fix the problems.
  • Often the drivers are not updated as described in the second paragraph. You can try to download them on the official website of the manufacturer of your computer or laptop. You will need to enter or find the number of your particular model, then select the version of the operating system and only then download the drivers for the audio.
  • It is recommended to install Windows updates using the appropriate center. If you have not done this for a long time, now is the time.
  • A simple reboot of the computer often helps: something may have come out of a crash. Restarting the operating system often helps to solve most computer problems. After him, check if the sound is working on the computer or not.

Let's sum up

Today, we tried to find out what to do if the sound on the computer or laptop is gone and does not work, regardless of what type of device gives it to you: be it wired or wireless speakers, headphones, or the built-in source. We hope that you succeeded in correcting this problem and were able to ensure that music, movies and other content were played without incident. Tell us in the comments how the problem befell you and how you fixed it.
