Windows Mouse Settings

A computer mouse is an indispensable computer control tool. Of course, performing almost all tasks, be it starting, closing programs, pointing, selecting objects, or even working in a browser, is possible from the keyboard using hot keys, but this is more likely a temporary solution in the absence of a manipulator. The average user should not even hope for a high speed of work in such unusual conditions, so the mouse is still the main assistant when working with a computer. Today, a variety of computer mice allows you to select a device that fully meets the requirements of each user. Mostly used are optical LED or laser mice. A typical model with two main buttons and a wheel is quite enough for everyday tasks, as a rule, only gamers bother with the choice. However, not every user even knows that the mouse can be customized to fit your needs, and many simply accept the default settings. Often, the standard parameters are really quite conveniently exposed, but the setting still makes the work with the manipulator more comfortable, and in some cases is simply necessary. Consider how to configure the mouse in Windows 7 or 10, using the standard tools of the operating system.

The correct work with the mouse in Windows.

How to change mouse settings

Game instances with many additional buttons are configured through special programs, whereas in order to configure a typical manipulator, the operating system capabilities are sufficient. Setting up a mouse in Windows 7 is simple:

  • Open the "Control Panel" (via the Start menu, from the shortcut or other convenient method).
  • Go to the subsection “Equipment and Sound”, where we will select “Mouse” (you can also use the search line on the Control Panel).
  • In the new window, consisting of five tabs, all the basic settings of the manipulator.

The first tab is responsible for setting the button configuration. Here it is possible to change their functions with each other, which is very useful if the user's leading hand is left. In order to do this, the item “Swap button assignments” should be checked. Here you can also change the speed of double-clicking, and also enable key sticking, which will allow you to drag and select objects without holding them with the mouse. After the necessary parameters are configured, click the "Apply" button to apply the changes, then "OK", after which the window closes.

The remaining tabs offer customization of other functions. For example, if you go to the "Pointers", there is an opportunity to modify the mouse pointer, and the "Pointer parameters" allow you to set the speed of movement and configure other advanced options. The “Wheel” tab is responsible for setting the scrolling, the “Equipment” contains information about the connected devices (clicking the “Properties” button opens the next window where you can not only view the information, but also update the driver, etc. - the same actions are available from Device Manager).

Despite the differences in the functionality of the OS of different versions, the configuration of the mouse in Windows 10 is almost the same. Mouse properties are available from the Control Panel (set “Small icons” in the viewing options and the search for the required item will be much easier). Selecting the "Mouse" from the list, you will see a window with the same tabs that allow you to configure the device, as in previous versions of the OS.

Adjusting the sensitivity of the mouse

Many do not even think about making adjustments to the operation of the device, and indeed, for everyday tasks, the available default settings are sufficient. But gamers or users whose professional activities require high precision are both very important in purchasing the “right” mouse and in adjusting the sensitivity of the device. In this case, the setting is also required if you do not hit the cursor on objects or other inconveniences are noticed during pointer movements. Depending on the working environment, it is necessary to change the sensitivity, adapting it to the tasks performed. This property of the device is ensured by the resolution of the sensor (CPI or DPI - how we configure this mouse parameter in Windows), the frequency of polling the USB port and the response time. If we are unable to change the characteristics with which the mouse from the manufacturer is allocated, then in the settings we can still slightly disperse even an ordinary mouse. Consider how to adjust the sensitivity of the mouse by making small changes to the settings. You can change the parameter on Windows 7 like this:

  • Follow the path "Control Panel" - "Equipment and Sound" - "Mouse".
  • Go to the tab "Index Options".
  • In the “Move” section, move the slider to the left (decrease speed) or right (increase), this is how the cursor speed changes.
  • If you check the option “Enable increased pointer accuracy”, the cursor will pause near the buttons - this way you will be better off hitting them.
  • Click "Apply", then "OK".

The second method, which allows you to configure the DPI of the mouse on the G7 as best as possible, involves using the Run console:

  • In the search bar menu "Start" enter the query "cmd".
  • To determine the sensitivity of the prescribed command REG QUERY "HKCU \ Control Panel \ Mouse" / v MouseSensitivity.
  • To set the required indicator in the command line, type "REG ADD" HKCU \ Control Panel \ Mouse "/ v MouseSensitivity / t REG_SZ / d" set the required value here "/ f".
  • A numerical value can be set from 1 to 20, decimal fractions can also be used (for example, 11.5, etc.).

To set the speed of the mouse cursor on Windows 10, do the following:

  • Go to the "Control Panel", where we select "Mouse."
  • In the "Index Options" move the slider to the desired position.

To adjust the sensitivity of the manipulator is also used special software that allows you to customize the device in detail "by itself". Many modern mice have drivers that provide more customization options. For example, to increase the sensitivity, the polling frequency of the port is configured (in the mouse driver settings). If the device in the kit did not go disk, you can download software for a specific model on the official website.

Configure double click

In various situations, for example, with the user's inexperience or limited physical abilities, it can be difficult to cope with the manipulator buttons. Among the parameters of the device is the ability to also change the speed of the double-click. So, to customize the mouse, as you will be more comfortable, open the properties window (“Mouse” from the “Control Panel”). Here, in the “Mouse buttons” tab, dragging the slider down (or increasing, if that is the goal) double-click speed. To check in the block there is a tab in the form of a folder, imitating its opening by double pressing the left button. Adjust the speed and agree with the changes.

How to adjust the wheel and scroll speed

If the mouse used on a laptop or PC has a wheel, which is not uncommon for modern devices, then you have the opportunity to customize this control too. You can do it all in the same window of the mouse properties in the "Wheel" tab. Here you will see two blocks:

  • Vertical scrolling. Adjust the rotation of the wheel to the specified number of lines (set the desired value) or one screen.
  • Horizontal scrolling allows you to adjust the scrolling to the selected number of characters horizontally (if the mouse supports the function).

You can also increase the scrolling speed in Windows 10 as follows:

  • Through the "Start" go to the "Options".
  • Select "Devices" - "Mouse".
  • Here you can scroll when reading several lines at a time, by selecting a value using the slider, or on one screen. In addition, there is an opportunity to enable the scroll option for inactive windows when you hover the cursor on them (by moving the toggle switch to the active position).

How to change the mouse pointer

If you do not accept the standards or the type of the cursor is tired, you can change it in the "Pointers" tab of the mouse properties window in Windows 10 or other versions. It is possible to install other pointer images in the “Scheme” block; below, in the settings field, the cursors available for this scheme will be visible (by clicking on each, you can only change its appearance in this scheme by selecting an image of your choice). Undo is done with the “Default” button, the “Browse” button opens the directory with the existing cursors, and if you want to turn on the shadow of the pointer, check the corresponding box. To set the mouse cursor correctly, after making the necessary changes, click the “Apply” button and then “OK”.

Additional mouse buttons

If you have an advanced copy of the manipulator, which includes, in addition to the main, additional buttons, you can configure them with the help of special software. Programs designed for this purpose already include game and software macros that will save you from unnecessary configuration steps. In the settings of some mice, versatility is also supported, that is, changing the options for the set values of the buttons, which makes it possible to assign a large number of tasks to the device. Basically, additional mouse buttons are used in gaming battles and allow you to replace the use of various key combinations on the keyboard. Some mouse modifications are able to execute commands when working with an office or on a network, as well as shutting down, restarting a computer, calling up a quick launch menu, etc. Drivers for a specific model can be found on the official website and configure the mouse in the most convenient way for quickly performing various actions. In the absence of drivers, universal applications will also work.

To set up additional mouse keys, different programs are used, and although their interface is different, they all work on the same principle, with the ability to customize the “extra” buttons to quickly perform various actions. Side buttons, like the standard ones, are already assigned by default, certain options are assumed for them, but you can also customize them for your tasks at your own discretion. The image of your mouse will be available in the program window, where the existing keys and the setting of commands on them are visually indicated. We assign buttons through filters, create, edit or use ready-made macros.

Other settings

In addition to the basic parameters, when the mouse is configured, you can also proceed to a more detailed acquaintance with the available functions. An option is available in the properties window in the Pointer Parameters tab that allows you to automatically position the cursor on the default button when a dialog box is opened (for example, OK, Save, etc.). In the "Visibility" block, you can configure the cursor display settings, such as showing the pointer track when it is moved, including its length (adjusted by dragging the slider), hiding when typing or using the Ctrl key (the function allows you to quickly find on the screen hidden cursor).

Since the functionality of the system does not support the setting of multifunctional mice, in the case of the gaming option it is better to use a special application right away. In addition to the key assignment, you can also adjust or disable the backlight of the device using drivers. The program for setting the mouse backlight allows you to perform the necessary actions through special buttons. Despite the simplicity of the device and the absence of the need to make changes for non-specific work, even the most ordinary computer mouse is capable of much. Some possibilities lie on the surface, but sometimes, to maximize the potential of the mouse, you have to dig a little in the settings.
