How to crimp an RJ-45 cable for internet at home

It is no secret that modern technologies are rapidly developing, so that we, their consumers, keep up with progress, we have to understand every little thing. To date, the Internet has occupied an integral part of society. To be able to set up a "connection with the world" at home requires special knowledge.

You can pinch the RJ-45 connector at home as well.

Surely each of us will sooner or later face such a problem as wear of a LAN cable for an Internet connection, breakdown of the Ethernet connector or lack of length of the network wire. To quickly solve this problem, you will need half an hour of time, knowledge of the algorithm of actions and the minimum set of components.

If you are interested in how to crimp the cable for the Internet using a special tool - crimping or even without it, special crimping schemes and the necessary details for this are welcome.

What is needed for crimping twisted pair

Crimping is the attachment of an eight-contact modular connector - an RJ-45 connector to a twisted pair (network cable consisting of eight pairwise twisted conductors). For this operation you will need:

  • Internet cable.
  • A couple of RJ-45 connectors . It will take one to work, however, their small price allows you to take one or more of them in reserve.
  • Crimp. He is a crimper, he is also a press-pliers - a special tool for significantly speeding up the crimping process.
  • Insulating cap. Optional, but it will help prevent subsequent bending of the wire and debris from entering the RJ-45 connector.

Network cable crimping schemes

To date, there are two circuits crimping twisted pair - a straight cable and crossover (crossover).

Usually a straight through cable technique is used to connect:

  • Computer and switch.
  • Computer and router.
  • TV and router.
  • Router and switch.

The cross-crimping of the cable is becoming less and less common today, as modern technology automatically detects the type of network wire and works smoothly with both straight and crossover cables. The cross type is used to connect mechanisms of the same type:

  • Router and router.
  • Switch and switch.
  • PC and PC.

The scheme of direct construction of colored conductors at both ends of the cable is as follows:

Left cable endRight cable end
1) White-orange1) White-orange
2) Orange2) Orange
3) White-green3) White-green
4) Blue4) Blue
5) White and blue5) White and blue
6) Green6) Green
7) White-brown (white-red)7) White-brown (white-red)
8) Brown (red)8) Brown (red)

As for the crossover cable, here both ends of the twisted pair will be different, and the distribution pattern of the conductors looks like this:

Left cable endRight cable end
1) White-orange1) White-green
2) Orange2) Green
3) White-green3) White-orange
4) Blue4) Blue
5) White and blue5) White and blue
6) Green6) Orange
7) White-brown (white-red)7) White-brown (white-red)
8) Brown (red)8) Brown (red)

Crimping the connector using crimp

Having decided on the scheme, we proceed to the most important part of the whole procedure - crimping the RJ-45 connector using a special tool - crimping. The peculiarity of work with the crimper is that it significantly saves time and performs the responsible part independently.

Work should begin with the cut-off of the old connector (if there is one, it will become a model for the location of the veins). Next, you should strip the twisted pair of insulation, exposing the colored wires so that their length matches the connector and they sat in it until it stops. The outer sheath can be cleaned with a double crimping knife or with a regular penknife. The colored wires will be twisted in pairs, so they should be disconnected, straightened and cut exactly to the same length. Having arranged the wiring according to the chosen scheme, we take the RJ-45 connector with the latch to the bottom. We insert the wires into it until it stops so that a small part of the insulation of the Internet cable is also included in the connector. When the wires lie in their guide channels, and the insulation edge is under the RJ-45 clamp strip, it is time to crimp. Place the connector with the wires in the tool connector. Only a couple of strokes are left - we compress the handles of the crimper so that the clip bar (contacts) of the RJ-45 plug cuts the insulation of the wires.

Make sure that the work was done qualitatively, that nothing departed and did not fall out. To complete the operation, we will wear an insulating cap. Now everything is ready for use!

Crimp connector without press tongs

If you do not have a tool to crimp the RJ-45 connector - do not despair. A pair of straight hands and a simple screwdriver will do everything at the highest level. You should not hide that work without press-ticks will last much longer and there is a possibility that we will not be able to properly crimp the wire the first time, but if we try, we will not lose anything.

The action algorithm is similar to what is described above: we strip the cable, check the length of the wires and the connector, align and trim the wires. Having distributed the colored wires according to the scheme, we place them inside the RJ-45 connector so that a part of the twisted pair insulation gets into the connector. Here, perhaps, the most interesting begins. Make sure that the order of the veins is not disturbed and they sit tightly along the guide channels. Our next step is to press down the connector clamp plate with a screwdriver. Half done! It remains to push the contacts of the RJ-45 connector into the insulation of the core wires. Calculating the force, one by one we push the wires of the clamp strip and “drown” them in a braid of colored wires. If it turned out to combine the contacts of the connector and the wires of the Internet cable into a solid line, then the work was completed successfully. So simply, without a specialized tool and at home, you can compress a twisted pair with high quality.

For complete happiness is not enough to try the sample in practice. If you have a tester, you can use it to check the resistance of the LAN cable. Otherwise, and without it, you can check the performance of the power cord by inserting it straight into the Ethernet cell of the computer or router. If everything was done correctly, the Internet will appear immediately. If not, try pressing the connector pins to the colored wires again.

As you have noticed - compress the power cord itself is not too difficult. I would also like to note that with the proper execution of actions, the result of working with both the press tongs and the screwdriver will be the same. Therefore, the choice of tools for crimping a network Internet cable at home is up to you.
