What is the network SSID and what is this identifier for?

The SSID value is a network identifier or, more simply, its name. This is what you see when you use the Internet through the Wi-Fi module. This name is necessary to find your access point among other routers operating in the coverage area of your computer or mobile device.

The name of the Wi-Fi network can be set individually or you can leave the default one, which is automatically assigned by the router

How is the SSID created and how can I find it? Typically, this value is the brand and model number of your equipment or a working system name, which is set automatically when you establish a connection with the provider.

How to change the name of the identifier? This is done through the settings of the router. To enter the parameters, enter your IP address in the address bar of the browser. And after logging in to the wireless network settings menu, you can change the identifier to your liking.

By default, the name of the SSID of your router can be recognized by everyone who is within the range of Wi-Fi, so when creating a new name, follow these guidelines:

  • Include not only numbers in the combination, but also letters.
  • Do not choose bright words that attract too much attention.
  • Do not use as a login names, dates of birth, any personal information.
  • Change the name of the network from time to time.

Internet connection protection

Most users who have installed routers in their homes will immediately know that the access point must be protected from the interference of unauthorized users so that they will not be able to use your Internet.

This requires a password that is entered when connecting to the device. You can create it in the settings of the router - use a combination of numbers, Latin characters, capital letters. It is recommended to choose the type of WPA2PSK encryption - it is the most stable and will protect against unauthorized use of the connection. But keep in mind that a single password is often insufficient, since very advanced users can bypass it. Correctly setting the login to the router can provide protection no worse than an access key, if you configure it for a different mode of operation.

Usually the router works in the following way: its name is open to everyone who is in the coverage area. But there is still a hidden mode, when using which the name is not displayed in the list of available connections. This allows you to secure your Internet connection, since other devices do not recognize it. It turns out that the network works, but remains invisible. And this allows you to effectively protect your connection from outside interference.

How to hide SSID?

In the settings menu of the router, in the item “Wireless network settings” there is a line “Hide SSID” - if it is activated, the identifier will become unavailable for all devices.

Now the question remains: how to find out your network yourself, if it is hidden? If you use the Internet via Wi-Fi on your home computer, follow these steps:

  • Open the network connection menu.
  • Select "Manage Wireless Networks".
  • In the top line, click "Add."

  • Select the menu to create a connection manually.
  • Enter the SSID identifier, key and encryption type - the data that you previously set in the router settings.

  • In the next window, click "Close" - now in the list of networks you will have a new connection. If necessary, the parameters can be changed or deleted.

If you are using a mobile device, turn on Wi-Fi and below the list of active connections, select “Add”, enter the data of the hidden access point.

Important note: It is worth noting that even if the network is hidden, complete security cannot be guaranteed, because there are special applications that can detect such connections. This mode of operation does not at all cancel the need to establish a strong password, and it is best to conduct control of the access point in a comprehensive manner, using all available methods of protection.

MultiSSID or how to create multiple names for one connection

We should also note the way the router works, when using it at the same time several access points operate, each of which has its own name and parameters. This mode of operation is needed in cases where you share Internet speed between different groups of users. This is true for offices and public institutions: one of the networks is set aside for personal use, the other for staff or friends, and the third for outsiders.

Multimode operation is enabled as follows:

  • Go to the settings of the router, select the MultiSSID Settings tab.
  • Check the box next to Enable.
  • Create the required number of points with an Internet connection, assign a separate login and password for each (for public use, keys are usually not used).

The SSID provides a large space for action — you can change it, hide it from other devices, or use it to create several separate networks with a personal name and access parameters. This allows you to comfortably use one device with a Wi-Fi point, fully customizing it for your tasks and needs.
