Fixing the "Bootmgr is compressed" error

The Microsoft Windows operating system is very user-friendly, but it is not without periodic problems and errors. In some cases, when starting the OS, problems arise which, at first glance, cannot be solved, since we see a black screen with some kind of inscription in front of us and no application can start. The “Bootmgr is compressed” error is one of the most common, but far from the worst. Unless, of course, the surface of the hard drive is not subjected to mechanical damage. Let's figure out how to fix it.

The method of correcting the error "Bootmgr is compressed".

Why an error occurs

If you, including your computer, instead of the boot screen of the Windows operating system, see the message “BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart ”, then you should not panic.

TIP. Sometimes this same error may be called “LOADMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart ”or“ Bootmgr is missing ”.

The essence of this error is that the OS automatically compresses the data on the hard disk, including the system files needed to boot the OS. The reason for the compression is usually the included function, which is activated if the user forgot to clean the hard disk. When it overflows, the system begins to clear it itself, compressing the data.

IMPORTANT. To avoid this problem, never check the box “Compress this disk to save space” in the tab “Properties of system disk C”.

In some cases, the problem may arise due to incorrect settings in the BIOS, especially if recently some settings have changed. A system crash is also possible - the appearance of certain programs or viruses can move and sometimes damage the bootloader file. In more rare cases, instead of “BOOTMGR is compressed” you can see the inscription “BOOTMGR image is corrupt”. If you see exactly this variation, we advise you to first check the HDD for damage. Just pressing the key combination does not correct the error. The computer will restart, and the caption will appear again. Let's find out how to fix it.

Correction Methods

The standard system recovery procedure is simple and straightforward. Except for one BUT: this error will be fixed only if you have a boot disk or any other media with Windows. As a rule, not all users have the same disk at hand. Replacing the Windows installer can serve as a special program, but they, too, unfortunately, must be on any media. Also suitable recovery disk.

TIP. If you do not have one or the other, but you have a PC with the same operating system, you can create a recovery disk on another computer and use it. You can also connect the hard drive to another PC.

Suppose you already have a carrier with the operating system. Next, make a couple of simple procedures:

  1. Insert the drive / flash drive, restart the computer.
  2. See what happens:
    • if the error again crashes, then in BIOS we set up booting from the CDROM or USB (depending on the media) and reboot again;
    • if it is a recovery disk, the option to select a language will first appear on the screen. Choose a language, click next - the item “System Restore” will appear;
    • To restore from the installation disk, click the “System Restore” link, and then select the OS to be restored.

  3. We wait a little, and then select the item "Command line". In cases where a recovery disk is used, the option to select the command line as one of the recovery methods will appear immediately.
  4. In the black window, enter the command:

WITH:

Press Enter

bootrec / fixmbr

Press Enter again and wait for the command to be executed - the MBR will be overwritten on the system partition of the hard disk. At the end, enter another command:

bootrec / fixboot

If a confirmation prompt appears, enter Y and Enter.

IMPORTANT. When entering all commands, pay attention to the layout - it must be English.
  1. We take out the media, exit recovery and reboot the PC. The OS should already boot.

If the problem occurs due to incorrect settings in the BIOS

This item is suitable for those whose PCs are equipped with more than one hard drive. It happens that the order of loading the disks is incorrectly set in the settings. To correct, do the following:

  1. Press Delete several times when we see a black background.
  2. Find the Hard Disk Boot Priority or Boot Device Priority item in the BIOS sections.
  3. Change the order of the disks, save the settings (by pressing the F10 key).
  4. Reboot.

If the change of the hard disk did not help, then we expose the one that was originally, and we conclude that the reason is not in the sequence of their loading.

If the error occurred due to software failure

In cases where your operating system has been installed for a long time and may well be crammed with “left-wing” programs (including those whose source you are not aware of) and viruses, normal reinstallation of Windows will help. If you are sure that this is not the case, and you have a lot of important information on the C drive, try all of the above methods. System Restore is complete. In order to avoid a repetition of the error, we recommend that you go to “My Computer”, right-click on the C drive and in the “Properties” tab uncheck “Compress this disk to save space”. Apply. Done!

As you can see, fix this error is easy enough, but do not forget that to fix it without a disk will not succeed. If you found a way, share it in the comments!
