How to draw simple geometric shapes in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop is widely used for working with images, providing a really wide range of possibilities. Most users use Photoshop to retouch photos, but, in addition, the program allows you to create: drawings, paintings, graphics - of varying degrees of complexity. Photoshop has several tools for creating images. The first thing you need to do is learn how to draw simple elements like triangles, lines, ellipses, and so on, as they are used very often to create all sorts of drawings. In this article we’ll take a closer look at how to draw simplest shapes in Photoshop. Let's figure it out. Go!

We comprehend the basics of computer graphics

Open Adobe Photoshop, pay attention to the toolbar. To go to the figures, click on the icon in the form of a rectangle. In the pop-up window you will see the following tools:

  • "Rectangle";
  • "Rectangle with rounded corners";
  • "Ellipse";
  • "Polygon";
  • "Line";
  • "Freeform".

The editor offers several classic and arbitrary forms.

In total there are three drawing modes:

  1. A new shape is created for which you can make a fill layer or vector mask.
  2. The outline of the shape is created and filled with some color.
  3. Pixel mode. In this case, the images are raster, not vector.

For each selected shape, geometrical parameters are specified, in other words, proportions. To draw a rectangle, select the appropriate tool, set the necessary contour settings and fill color. And now just set the cursor at the point of the sheet from which you want to start drawing. Hold down the left mouse button, stretch the rectangle as needed.

There is nothing easier than to draw a line. To do this, use the same tool.

For the circle, use the Shift key or the advanced settings menu.

Let's go to how to draw a circle in Photoshop. Here everything happens in a similar way. Select the tool "Ellipse", determine the color and thickness of the contour. If you want to get a circle, not an ellipse, hold down the Shift key on the keyboard or set a “circle” in the geometric parameters section.

Now let's figure out how to draw a triangle in Photoshop. In this case, everything is not so obvious, but it is not any more difficult. All you need is to select "Polygons" and in the small window "Sides" set the number of corners. Accordingly, to get a triangle, enter the number "3". Then everything is done exactly the same as in previous cases. Using the Polygon tool, you can get a shape with any number of angles. If you want to get a right triangle, draw a square, and then cut it half diagonally.

Arrows at the beginning or end can be set in the tool properties

Consider how to draw an arrow in Photoshop. This can be done in two ways. The first is that you need to select the Line tool, then in the parameters window, mark which side of the line the arrow will be (at the beginning or at the end), then you need to set the arrow thickness in pixels. Place the cursor at the desired point and begin to stretch the line with the mouse. The second way is to select "Arbitrary shape." On the top panel there is a table with templates, among them there is an arrow.

Templates that come in the usual configuration of the application

Now you know how to add the simplest geometric shapes in Photoshop. As you can be sure nothing is simpler. Write in the comments whether this article was useful for you and ask any questions of interest on the topic considered.
